Built by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century, the castle, with its massive octagonal structure, dominates the small stretch of western Murge situated 28 km from Trani. Universally considered a brilliant example of medieval architecture, Castel del Monte actually combines different stylistic elements, from the Romanesque cut of the entrance lions to the Gothic frame of the towers, from the classical art of friezes inside the defensive structure of architecture to the delicate refinements Islamic of its mosaics. Built around 1240, Castel del Monte became the permanent seat of the court of Frederick II of Swabia, who became sovereign of the Kingdom of Sicily only three years ago. The monarch, nicknamed “Stupor Mundi” due to the eclecticism and vastness of his culture, bequeathed to his Castle all the mystery that surrounded its figure. The mathematical and astronomical rigor of its planimetry, based on the eight as a guide number and its positioning, studied in order to create particular symmetries of light in the days of solstice and equinox, create a symbolism that has fascinated scholars for centuries, leaving visitors a feeling of pleasant enigma. In addition to this, the Castel de Monte military facility curiously lacks the elements that characterize most of the military monuments of the period such as the city walls, the moat and the stables. A priceless masterpiece of Italian history, Castel del Monte fully deserves the title of “World Heritage”: a place to live in its thousand mysteries and to visit at least once in a lifetime.
